Choice

Seema regretted her decision. Actually she regretted her life.

The year before had been a nightmare. First her parents passed away and now her husband. She was left with no one. Siblings were fine but they weren't going to compensate the need for a life partner. The need for a companion. The need for a life.

It had been love at first sight for Seema and Suresh. Yet after 8 years of holy matrimony, here she was standing at the door; ready to leave. She had to change her life. Now or never.

Leaving her distraught in-laws in absolute misery, she went on to re-marry within a year. And not just anyone but Suresh’s best friend. A year later they had a son. Finally she was happily married and a mother. The gossip circles often buzzed with her news and opinions of how she got what she wanted.

The only question lingering in a tiny corner of my mind was - “Was it the right thing to do in order to choose a life?”

So when I met her at a recent party, I confronted her - “Did you ever love Suresh?” With a heavy sigh, Seema replied - “Everyone is self-centered; it’s just the radius that differs.”

Yours' truly,

  1. Aww... I feel sad for Seema here. Life can throw a lot of unexpected twists and turns and often we find love in the most unexpected places. It is sad when people look to question past emotions and loyalties because of the feelings of the present.
Nice take on the prompt... I am still struggling to find a way to use it. :)

    1. Absolutely Roshan. Even if things seem unrealistic or brutal on the outside, there is every valid reason why it happened that way on the inside and we, as people, don't have the right to judge anyone.

Hope you find your story for the prompt soon :)

  2. I guess we judge everyone so much that we forget we have no right to decide the course of someone else's life...

    1. That's right Nabanita. This was a creative take of a true incident. Today I feel happy for such individuals since everyone has a right to live life their own way. If life throws innumerable tragedies at you, it is in your hands to change things to make them work out for you. :) Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Seema had her reasons for doing what she did, if only we knew what was going through her mind then. Life is unpredictable and so are the ones living it.

    1. Welcome here Sulekkha. :) Yes, you are right. Since people don't know from the outside on what's happening on the inside, they have no right to judge anybody.

  5. The society that judges a woman so easily without giving a second thought often forget to see through her pain!

  6. How horrible the time would have been for Seema! Glad she found someone to help her ease the pain. And about society, well they will talk no matter what!
